Biogas Engineering Solution

Quick turnaround on a fully engineered biogas filtration solution.

Quick turnaround on a fully engineered biogas filtration solution.

Last week we completed a major biogas filtration project with a leading global paper and board packaging manufacturer, at their facility in SE England.

The customer has a long-established biogas plant on site making renewable energy from the wastewater produced in their paper and board recycling process.  The facility has historically used a biofilter to remove high levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the biogas stream, but a problem with this biofilter meant that the biogas needed to be flared, preventing the generation of renewable electricity on site in their CHP engines.

A quick solution was required to solve the problem as soon as possible, to restore green energy production at the site.  Puragen were selected to undertake the work, being the only UK-based activated carbon company with in-house engineering and mobile carbon filter manufacturing capability.

Extensive pipework was required to facilitate installation of two of our VOCSorber® 30 mobile carbon filters into the customer’s process, since activated carbon filtration had never been used on this site previously.

Puragen’s Engineering and Site Services teams were able to design, manufacture and install all pipework and both filters within three weeks of the order being received.

We anticipate monthly changeouts for these two VOCSorber® 30 filters, due to the relatively high levels of H2S in the biogas stream.  Another key benefit of working with Puragen is that, when the activated carbon is spent, it can be recycled via thermal reactivation at our award-winning facility in Immingham.  Even high-sulfur carbons don’t present a problem, with our novel and unique award-winningCR3’ process that can recycle these ‘difficult’ spent carbons, that would previously have been disposed of as waste.   When combined with our #NoHiddenFees pricing policy, this ensures a predictable and sustainable solution for dealing with customers’ spent carbon media.

Our ‘CR3’ process for handling high-sulfur spent carbons was awarded a Highly Commended at the 2024 British Renewable Energy Awards (BREA, organised by the Renewable Energy Association, REA).  It has also been shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious MRW National Recycling Awards and, further afield, we are one of two finalists in the ‘Biogas Problem-Solver‘ category at this year’s European Biogas Conference, organised by the European Biogas Association (EBA).  We look forward to updating this page with the results!!

Please get in touch with our friendly and knowledgeable team if we can assist you with our biogas purification requirements.
