Northern Ireland LFG

Three of our flagship VOCSorber® 30 units on one site in Northern Ireland

One of our recent landfill gas filtration installations was this site in Northern Ireland, requiring three of our flagship VOCSorber® 30 mobile carbon filter units.

This was our first Northern Ireland LFG project and our Engineering Manager, Jamie Stewart, attended the site to oversee the vessels’ installation and ensure a safe and efficient operation.

The vessels are filled with a specialist impregnated FiltraCarb® activated carbon, which is optimised for the removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from the biogas stream, preventing it from damaging the CHP (combined heat and power) engines on site.  By protecting the CHP engines in this way, maintenance costs and downtime are both reduced, thereby increasing the efficiency of the site and output levels of renewable electricity.

We supply a wide range of activated carbon products for use in biogas and biomethane purification.  The range includes ‘standard’ grades for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including siloxanes and limonene, as well as impregnated grades for the removal of inorganic contaminants such as ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

The VOCSorber® 30 mobile carbon filter is the largest ‘deep bed’ gas phase filter in our range, but other sizes are available for lower flow rates, or less contaminated gas streams, including 2m3 and 5m3 variants.  Mobile carbon filters of this type offer customers a convenient ‘plug & play’ option, being delivered to their site on one our of dedicated tipping trailers.  No on-site carbon handling is required – when the filter is ‘spent’ it is simply exchanged for a replacement adsorber, and the spent filter is returned to one of our service centres, where the carbon is removed and sent for recycling at our thermal reactivation facility in Immingham, Lincs.

The use of reactivated carbon, rather then the use and subsequent disposal of new/virgin activated carbon, offers a huge saving in terms of ‘carbon footprint’ (>85%) as well as economic benefits.
