Background
A PFAS manufacturing site had historically discharged its process wastewater to the local sewer network. Following an environmental investigation, the facility was identified as the source of PFAS detected in the system.
Upon notification, the operator immediately halted discharge and responsibly contained the affected wastewater in large on-site storage tanks while a compliant and practical treatment solution was developed.
Challenge
The site faced several critical challenges:
- Historical wastewater containing 17 different PFAS species
- A large treatment volume of 7 million litres
- Regulatory scrutiny and the need for rapid compliance
- Requirement for a technically robust, proven PFAS removal solution
- Safe and responsible end-of-life management of the treatment media
Solution
Puragen’s ‘Search, Capture, Destroy; approach starts with profiling to identify the specific PFAS compounds present enabling appropriate selection of FiltraPure® activated carbon optimised for targeted adsorption. The final phase is the reactivation of spent carbon. Our proprietary process that ensures the safe destruction and permanent removal of contaminants from the environment.
Following consultation with Puragen, treatment commenced using CleanFlo® mobile filtration units and FiltraPure® CH800 Extra, a surface-modified activated carbon specifically engineered for superior PFAS removal. The mobile configuration allowed the treatment system to be integrated quickly, enabling staged processing of the stored wastewater without disruption to ongoing plant operations.
- 7 million litres of PFAS-contaminated water treated
- 17 PFAS species addressed
- Treatment conducted via mobile carbon filtration units
- Continuous monitoring throughout the remediation phase
Why CH800 Extra
- Superior performance across long- and short-chain PFAS
- Optimised adsorption capacity for complex multi-species contamination
- Suitable for high-volume industrial applications
Results
The final outlet measurements demonstrated exceptional removal performance, with PFAS concentrations reduced to extremely low levels following treatment.
The results confirmed:
- Effective multi-species PFAS removal
- Stable performance throughout the treatment campaign
- Successful remediation of the entire 7 million litre volume
The outcome provided regulatory confidence and enabled compliant discharge of the treated water.
Closed Loops Solution
Puragen’s reactivation technology is specifically engineered to ensure the effective separation and destruction of PFAS compounds, while fully restoring the carbon’s adsorption capacity for sustainable future reuse.
Our approach ensures responsible PFAS destruction and a sustainable alternative to single-use disposal
