Drinking Water: Removal of PFAS

Search, Capture, Destroy: a multi-site PFAS treatment solution, achieving complete PFAS destruction at a UK water utility.

Background

The client, a UK-based water utility, was dealing with PFAS contamination in raw water at several of their sites.
The DWI (Drinking Water Inspectorate) introduced strict limits on PFAS in treated water in August 2024, with a requirement for close monitoring of a range of PFAS concentrations. This new guidance has shifted the need for a reliable and effective PFAS treatment solution.

Although the client had previously worked with Puragen, those projects were small-scale. This new requirement involved multiple sites and a sustained, long-term treatment strategy. Puragen tendered for the work and secured a 5-year contract over more established competitors.

Solution

Key to the project’s success was Puragen’s technical expertise in water treatment and its ability to deliver a complete PFAS solution – including the use of FiltraPure® CH800 activated carbon, specifically engineered for PFAS adsorption.

FiltraPure® CH800 provided the required performance due to its optimised pore structure and surface chemistry, enabling high removal efficiency of short- and long-chain PFAS compounds. Puragen also demonstrated the capability to safely and completely destroy PFAS during thermal reactivation of spent carbon, ensuring full environmental compliance and meeting the client’s sustainability goals.

Key factors for success

  • FiltraPure® CH800 Activated Carbon
A specialised granular activated carbon designed for PFAS removal, delivering high adsorption capacity and extended bed life. Its performance was a critical differentiator in meeting DWI standards across multiple treatment sites.
  • Quality of Service: Puragen’s ability to deliver high-quality, reliable service stood out, particularly in ensuring health and safety and quality standards were met.
  • Product Innovation: The development of a new, effective product to target PFAS removal from water was a key factor. Puragen’s ongoing product development and technical support, provide assurance in meeting evolving regulatory and performance demands.
  • Spent Carbon Reactivation: UK-based carbon recycling facilities that can remove and destroy PFAS in the spent carbon and recycle the carbon for re-use.
  • Site Services: Puragen’s experienced service team ensured smooth installation, monitoring, and carbon exchange across all operational sites, ensuring continuity of supply and treatment performance.

Outcome/ Results
The relationship continues to evolve with the client, highlighting Puragen’s commitment to advancing activated carbon technologies in drinking water treatment and remaining adaptable to future needs.
