Mobile Filter Retrofit Increases Biomethane Production and Treatment Stability

A mobile VOCSorber® filtration upgrade restored full biomethane output, improved plant uptime, and delivered consistent contaminant removal through a…

Context

A biomethane production site was operating with fixed activated carbon filters that could no longer meet the level of contaminant removal required and the system was unable to maintain treatment standards, forcing the site to reduce biomethane flow to remain compliant.

Challenge

  • The existing fixed filters were not achieving required contaminant removal, causing operational constraints.
  • The site footprint was extremely limited, and initial assessments suggested that installing two VOCSorber® 30 units would be impractical.
  • Any upgrade needed to be completed rapidly and aligned with the annual shutdown to avoid extended downtime.

Solution

Puragen Engineering conducted a detailed site visit to evaluate potential filter locations, pipework routing, and configuration modelling. Despite the size constraints on the site, the assessment confirmed that a lead/lag configuration of two VOCSorber® 30 mobile filters was feasible, with the lead unit managing the primary contaminant load and the lag unit providing final polishing to ensure full treatment compliance. Following approval, Puragen completed the full design, manufacture, and pipework installation within two weeks of the visit, scheduled during the annual shutdown to avoid operational disruption.

Results

The upgraded treatment system has delivered measurable operational improvements across the biomethane plant.

  • The site is operating at full load, supported by increased biomethane output and restored treatment capacity.
  • Plant uptime and reliability have significantly improved, with stable performance across varying operating conditions.
  • The lead/lag VOCSorber® configuration provides consistent contaminant removal, ensuring compliance and eliminating the previous need to reduce flow during periods of higher loading.
