This week is British Science Week, the annual celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). 2024 sees the event mark its 30th anniversary and it is organised by the British Science Association (BSA), which itself has been around since 1831!
For an environmental purification service provider like Puragen, STEM plays a key role in everything we do, from operating and maintaining state-of-the-art reactivation plants and designing and building mobile carbon filters, to developing the latest cutting-edge activated carbons and helping customers solve their gas/liquid phase purification challenges.
Recent examples of STEM-related successes in our organisation include the following:
- We are now able to safely reactivate spent carbons containing PFAS-group ‘forever chemicals’ and completely destroy the PFAS;
- Our new ‘CR3’ reactivation process can handle spent carbons heavily loaded with sulfur, from biogas/biomethane purification applications, that were previously considered untreatable and had to be disposed of as waste. Plus, we do this with #nohiddenfees – we agree a cost in advance and don’t hit customers with ‘surprise extras’ further down the line!
- Development of a class-leading gas phase mobile filter, the VOCSorber® HV20V, that uses novel design concepts to allow it to treat flows of up to 60,000 Nm3/h.
Even within a relatively small organisation like ours, there are many roles in our teams for STEM-qualified professionals. Some examples of job titles of current STEM-qualified colleagues include: Managing Director; European Production Director; Technical & Development Director; Head of Projects; Marketing Manager, Technical Manager; R&D Manager; Business Development Manager; Sales Manager; Design, Manufacturing & Projects Manager; Laboratory Team Leader; Laboratory Chemist,… The career opportunities in a technical B2B organisation like ours are varied and exciting, so if you are considering embarking in a STEM-related higher education course, looking for a mid-course placement position, or thinking about applying for your first role in industry, it is important to understand the range of jobs available to you.
