The future’s bright; the future’s Green!
2022 promises to be an exciting year for the UK biomethane industry, with the official start-up of the government’s Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) at the end of November last year.
The GGSS provides tariff support for new plants producing biomethane from anaerobic digestion (AD), for injection into the gas grid. Its aim is to increase the proportion of green gas in the grid, which can contribute significantly towards the UK’s climate change targets.
The GGSS effectively replaces the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which closed to new applicants in March 2021 and is intended to work alongside other funding mechanisms such as the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), whereby biomethane is used as a renewable vehicle fuel rather than being injected into the gas grid for use in domestic heating etc.
The use of biomethane, as an alternative to fossil fuels, represents the ultimate win-win for the environment. Not only does is help to decarbonise sectors of the economy that have traditionally been considered tricky to decarbonise, such as heating and transport, but it generally makes use of waste feedstocks such as agricultural by-products, food waste and sewage.
Puragen is the leading supplier of carbon filtration solutions into the biomethane industry in the UK, where it is used to purify the biogas streams as part of the upgrading process, or for general odour abatement . A range of activated carbons is available to remove siloxanes and other VOCs, as well as inorganic contaminants such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3). Our activated carbon can be supplied in one of our Clean-Flo® VOCSorber® mobile carbon filters, which offer a convenient plug & play solution to all of your purification challenges. Spent carbon can be recycled via thermal reactivation at our dedicated state-of-the-art facility in Immingham, NE Lincs.
