Lightning may not strike twice, but awards do!
This November, we are absolutely thrilled to have won not one, but two prestigious awards in just two weeks!
At the National Recycling Awards, our submission for “High-Sulfur Spent Carbon Reactivation” was crowned the winner in the Energy Innovation category. This breakthrough addresses a major challenge in the biogas industry. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a toxic and corrosive gas, has always been a primary contaminant in biogas. It can severely damage downstream combined heat and power (CHP) engines or prevent the biomethane gas from meeting grid-injection quality standards.
Activated carbon is the best available technology for removing H2S from biogas streams, but the process leaves elemental sulfur trapped within the carbon pores. Due to the high levels of sulfur, thermal reactivation, a method used to recover spent carbon, has typically been unfeasible. As a result, these spent carbons are often discarded through landfilling or incineration.
Thanks to the incredible efforts of our R&D team, we have developed a unique process that successfully removes sulfur contamination. This means high-sulfur spent carbon can now be reprocessed at our thermal reactivation facility in the UK. The reactivated carbon is ready for use in future purification applications, preventing thousands of tonnes of waste each year.
We are proud to be the first to market with this cutting-edge technology, operational since late 2023. No other activated carbon company in the UK or mainland Europe currently has this capability.
“This Energy Innovation award will proudly sit alongside our Gold Award from this year’s Green Apple Environment Awards, which recognises and rewards outstanding environmental practices globally. Last year, we earned a Bronze Award for our REACT-Sys® thermal reactivation process. In 2024, we were honoured with the Gold Award for our groundbreaking PFAS-busting technology, known as ‘Search, Capture & Destroy’.”
