The UK Government has recently published its 2023 Biomass Strategy, which sets out the role sustainable biomass can play in reaching net zero, what government is doing to enable that objective, and where further action is needed.
Alongside, other forms of renewable power, namely solar and wind, energy supplied from biomass sources needs to play a vital role in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and improving our energy security. Biogas and biomethane, in particular, offer the advantage of being a base-load energy source, generally using waste feedstocks (food waste, agricultural waste, sewage etc) to generate renewable energy and produce a digestate that offers a non-chemical alternative to traditional fertilisers, thereby contributing towards a truly circular economy.
Our role as a supplier of activated carbon purification systems, which includes our fleet of VOCSorber mobile carbon filters, supports the sector in a number of ways:
- Purification of biogas and biomethane, particularly the removal of H2S and siloxanes;
- Odour abatement and the scrubbing of VOCs at biomass collection/usage locations;
- Reduction of ammonia (NH3) emissions from agricultural sources (a key element of the government’s Clean Air Strategy).
