Energy
Puragen helps the biogas and energy-from-waste (EfW) sectors purify gas and reduce emissions.
Puragen’s applications for the Energy industry effectively remove harmful compounds during biogas filtration and upgrading—helping operators protect assets, ensure compliance and maximise operational output.
During the incineration of non-recyclables at EfW facilities, powdered activated carbon is used to remove mercury, dioxins and furans, to ensure environmental compliance in the flue gas treatment systems.
Key processes we help with
Activated carbon plays a vital role in the EfW and Biogas sectors by purifying raw gases and upgrading biogas to high-purity biomethane.
Contaminants that require removal from the gas stream will depend on the feedstock and processing conditions, but often include:
Common in personal care and household products, siloxanes can cause silica to build up on any hot surface inside CHP engines. There are two main types of siloxane contaminant—linear siloxanes and cyclic siloxanes—and we offer specially formulated activated carbon products to remove each type.
A toxic, corrosive and odorous gas, H₂S poses safety and equipment risks. In moist conditions, it forms corrosive acids that can damage engine components and infrastructure. Our impregnated activated carbon grades are designed specifically for high-capacity H₂S removal.
Biogas may also contain other contaminants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ammonia (NH₃), pinene and limonene, which contribute to odour issues and can affect downstream processing. Our tailored carbon products provide efficient adsorption and removal of these trace contaminants.
At EfW facilities, the dosing of powdered activated carbon (PAC) has been identified as the Best Available Technique (BAT) for the abatement of mercury, dioxins and furans in flue gas treatment systems.
