Exactly four years after being announced by the European Commission, the new Energy-from-Waste (EfW) Best Available Techniques Reference (BREF) document applies from December.

This new legislation, which relates to waste incineration facilities across the EU and the UK, requires far lower atmospheric emissions to be achieved, particularly for NOx, mercury and VOCs including dioxins and furans.

Activated carbon is recognised within the BREF as being the best technology for the abatement of mercury and VOCs, both in post-incinerator flue gas treatment (FGT) systems and also in the treatment of process and wastewater.

Puragen is the market leader in the supply of powdered activated carbon (PAC) into this sector and our FiltraPure® FGT® range sets a benchmark for performance and value-for-money.  We also offer a specialised double-impregnated PAC, which has traditionally been used extensively within the medical waste sector, where there is a risk of higher mercury levels, but which is also now being used by an increasing number of municipal EfW facilities who are concerned about the new BREF limits.
