Background
A major beverage plant on the U.S. West Coast relies on high-quality water for its production processes. Historically, the plant treated its water supply with chlorine gas and used incumbent carbon beds to ensure water purity. Consistent water quality is critical to maintaining their operations, protecting equipment, and ensuring product integrity.
Challenge
The plant faced operational performance issues due to aging and poorly maintained incumbent carbon beds. Heavy rainfall compounded the situation, rendering several local aquifers inoperable and forcing the plant to draw from an alternative water source, treated with chloramine instead of chlorine gas.
The incumbent carbon media, however, was not designed for chloramine removal. This caused residual chloramine to break through at the outlet of the carbon beds, posing a direct risk to the plant’s production lines, threatening an imminent shutdown.
Solution
The plant’s service provider approached Puragen to deliver an emergency response. Our team collaborated with the plant operators and within just a few days, supplied and installed high-performance catalytic carbon manufactured at its U.S. facility.
This carbon selected was specifically engineered for chloramine removal, ensuring rapid stabilisation of water quality and preventing costly downtime.
Results
- Operational continuity:: The plant avoided a production shutdown and maintained uninterrupted operations.
- Enhanced water treatment: Puragen’s catalytic carbon now delivers optimal performance for chloramine removal.
- Ongoing assurance: Regular monitoring and maintenance ensure consistent water quality, protecting both production and product integrity while providing peace of mind for the end user.
Puragen’s activated carbon plays a critical role ensuring water, air and ingredients are compliant with safety and purity standards. Our high-performance filtration media and mobile filters remove a range impurities and contaminants, including:
- Color causing compounds: Decolorisation and purification of wines, alcohols and liquids beverages to improve of clarity and visual appearance
- Fermentation by-products: Removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other organic compounds to improve taste, flavor and stability
- Disinfection byproducts (DBPs): Dechlorination and purification of water in the production of the beverages
- Pesticides and residues: Removal of organic contaminants in raw products including patulin in apple juice
An expert-led, end-to-end approach ensures uniform taste, appearance and shelf stability across every batch—whether in soft drinks, fruit juices, spirits, or brewing.
