Reactivation
Puragen is a leader in sustainable carbon use. We operate one of the most advanced closed-loop carbon reactivation networks in Europe.
Instead of taking the spent carbon from drinking water and industrial applications to a landfill or other waste disposal, we collect it and take it to a thermal reactivation facility where it can be recycled, tested and certified for re-use.

Tailored Reactivation
In many applications, we design tailored reactivation plans for each customer.
Each batch of spent carbon is carefully analysed to determine the right reactivation protocol, ensuring consistent quality and performance in the recycled product.
Our award-winning technologies, including advanced PFAS removal and destruction, meet the highest standards for purity and safety. All reactivated carbon is fully analysed and tested before reuse.
By combining technical expertise and innovative technologies with robust logistics and compliance systems, we help customers achieve closed-loop purification—reducing waste, conserving resources, and enabling truly circular filtration.
How does carbon reactivation work?
We operate a cost-effective, closed-loop reactivation model that helps customers reduce environmental impact, meet sustainability targets, and cut long-term carbon costs.
We collect and transport spent carbon to our advanced thermal reactivation facilities, and process it under controlled conditions to restore its adsorption capacity for reuse.
Our facilities adhere to strict quality, safety, and environmental standards, with full traceability and documentation at every step.
- Spent carbon collection – we recover used spent carbon from customers fixed filters and from our mobile filter fleet.
- Hot Acid Wash – we use a proprietary pre-kiln hot acid wash process for spent carbons from drinking water facilities.
- Thermal reactivation – the carbon is gradually rotated through a kiln at temperatures to desorb impurities.
- Emissions control – contaminants are destroyed using advanced emissions technology, including thermal oxidisers and chemical scrubbers.
- Recycled carbon – We return high-performance reactivated carbon ready for reuse. For drinking water applications, we return the same carbon in a fully closed loop.

What are the benefits of reactivating spent carbon?
Puragen’s reactivation processes are part of our closed-loop model. By reactivating spent carbon, we reduce waste and costs for our customers.
- Efficient Filtration – reduce carbon disposal costs and reduce reliance on high cost virgin material.
- Sustainable Purification – lower CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared to virgin carbon use and disposal.
- Assured Carbon Quality – stringent quality control guarantees reliable performance for every application.

Our award-winning carbon reactivation plant
Puragen’s Immingham reactivation facility is the most advanced in the UK, recognised for its role in reducing CO₂ emissions and destroying PFAS contaminants.
Sustainability
We won the 2024 Green Apple award for our PFAS technology and the 2023 award for environmental best practice for reducing the carbon footprint of reactivation by up to 90% compared to virgin carbon.
Technical expertise
We have extensive R&D and technical laboratories for testing and analysis, quality control and research and development of carbon reactivation products and processes.
Scalable processing
We reactivate thousands of tonnes of spent carbon per year, and have the capacity to service high-volume requirements.
Total quality assurance
We test and certify every batch of reactivated carbon to meet strict purity and efficiency standards for full traceability.
What are the different kinds of spent carbon reactivation?
Facility | Application(s) | Reactivation |
---|---|---|
CR1: for Green list carbon | Drinking water and food-grade (including Halal and Kosher) | Reactivated per-customer — you get back exactly the same batch for assured quality control |
CR2: for Amber list carbon | Industrial and environmental (e.g. Biogas, VOCs, waste water and remediation) | Pooled reactivation — we restore carbon for re-use across multiple customers |
CR3: for High-sulfur carbon | Biogas & biomethane | A specialised process for heavily loaded, high-sulfur carbons. |
PAC and Red list carbon | Medical/pharmaceutical waste, chemical processing, coal-fired power plants and waste incineration etc. | Cannot be reactivated. Instead, we partner with licensed handlers for responsible disposal |
