January saw the launch of the new Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which effectively replaces the old Feed-In Tariff (FiT). The SEG is an obligation set by the UK Government for licensed electricity suppliers to offer a tariff and make payment to small-scale low-carbon generators, such as AD biogas plants, for electricity exported to the National Grid. The launch of the SEG should provide a welcome boost for the UK biogas sector and comes at a perfect time as we contemplate the essential move towards a future powered by more renewable energy.
