NIOSH notes that appropriately designed fume hoods or local exhaust ventilation in tandem with activated carbon and HEPA filtration can reduce fumes and particles in the air to acceptable levels. Some 3D printers come with built-in fume hoods, but the 3DFS is the first stand-alone enclosure that works with multiple printers. A major advantage is that the enclosure is clear. It seals to the printer, but it provides the user a complete view of the printing process.
Future Uses
Of course, Ultimaker is not the only 3D printer on the market. However, the success of the 3DFS, combined with growing awareness of the potential safety issues of 3D printing, is very likely to encourage other manufacturers to develop similar filtration systems. It is even possible that at some point, the use of air filtration systems will be regulated for 3D printers located in offices, schools, and government buildings.

Activated carbon has been used since antiquity to purify air. It works through adsorption, in which contaminants are attracted to the surface molecules of the activated carbon. In conjunction with HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filtration, which removes particulate matter at sizes of 0.3 microns and above, activated carbon filters are an excellent way to remove both toxic and noxious contaminants from the air.
